MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WAFF) – A man was arrested after an overnight fatal shooting in New Market.
Officials with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a shooting scene at a home on Bent Creek Lane in New Market on Sunday at approximately 1:15 a.m.
Authorities said when the call came in, it was reported that someone had been shot.
Sheriff deputies arrived on the scene within minutes and located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures until HEMSI paramedics arrived.
Authorities said despite their combined efforts, the victim, identified as 23-year-old Evan Mayomi of Birmingham, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene and conducted an investigation. Following the investigation, detectives arrested Xavier Turner, 31, in connection with the homicide.
Turner is currently being held in the Madison County Jail without bond.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
