MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A Warren man who took a plea deal in the death of his roommate in 2023 was sentenced on Monday.
According to authorities, Donald Dawan Renfroe shot and killed his roommate, James Wilkins, in their Warren apartment on June 8, 2023.
Wilkins was reported missing by his family the next day.
Police said Renfro was identified as a person of interest before they executed search warrants at their apartment and on a vehicle associated with Renfroe. Investigators reportedly found evidence of a patched bullet hole in a wall and suspected blood.
Police said Renfroe had rented and purchased cleaning supplies on the day of Wilkins’ disappearance.
Renfroe reportedly worked alongside Darius Glenn to clean out Wilkins’ apartment and dispose of his body. His body was found five months later in northern Michigan.
Glenn testified against Renfroe in April 2024 as part of his plea bargain.
Renfroe pleaded no contest on May 19 to second-degree homicide, tampering with evidence, concealing the death of an individual and felony firearm.
He was sentenced on July 7, 2025, to 31 to 60 years in prison.
