Venezuelan gang members arrested by SPD, 1 faces multiple murder charges in Chicago

Three men accused of being part of a Venezuela-based gang known as Tren de Aragua were arrested by Summerville police for shoplifting in late February. Authorities now believe that one of the men nabbed in Summerville was connected to a late-January double homicide in Chicago.

Edison Alejandro Ramiro Munoz, Alejandro J. Miranda Rodriguez and Yosveni Miched Parra Quinonez allegedly shoplifted at the Palmetto State Armory on 366 East Fifth North Street on Feb. 27, Deputy Chief Christopher Hirsch said.

United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, along with Homeland Security Investigations, looked into the three men and their backgrounds following their detainment by the Summerville Police Department.

Through the investigation, the agencies discovered that Munoz, 29, was one of two primary suspects in a double-homicide, attempted murder and kidnapping of three migrant women in Chicago, Hirsch said.

According to reports from the Chicago Police Department, Munoz and co-defendant, Ricardo Gonzalez Leon, 31, forcefully abducted three people they met in a shelter on Jan. 27.

They then are accused of taking them to an apartment in the 3300 block of West Van Buren Street around 6:30 p.m., where they locked the three people in a room with armed men watching over them, threatening to kill them.

The following day, the three women were led to a red Toyota, put inside by Munoz and taken to another alley in the 7700 block of South Oglesby Avenue.

Surveillance footage supposedly captured Munoz leaving the vehicle with a handgun and dragging an unnamed woman out of the car, according to law enforcement.

Munoz then shot the 31-year-old woman multiple times, while the other men involved shot Orlana Rodriguez, 37, and Yeris Castillo, 40, multiple times – leaving them for dead, law enforcement said.

The surviving woman was found by police and transported to a Chicago hospital. The other two died.

Munoz was extradited from Chicago to South Carolina, where he faces two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, three counts of aggravated armed kidnapping and three counts of aggravated unlawful restraint.

Summerville police also reported that the hat worn by Munoz during the alleged murders in Chicago was found on his body when he was arrested in Summerville.

“I am proud of the diligence of the members of Team 6, who apprehended Gabriel Edison Romero during the commission of his crimes here in Summerville,” Summerville Police Chief Douglas Wright said. “Their keen investigative skills helped lead them to the arrest of this heinous individual, and he hopes their efforts help bring some closure to the surviving victim and the other two deceased victims’ families in Chicago.”
