Alcohol Law Enforcement agents on Tuesday arrested a Fayetteville man they say was involved in a shooting at a Fairmont bar earlier in July.
According to ALE, a shooting happened on July 6 at 11 Eleven Lounge and Bar on West Thompson Street in Fairmont. Authorities said the shooting involved an employee providing security at the bar.
During their investigation, ALE agents and the Fairmont Police Department learned the employee, later identified as Jhaves Gilliam, had given a fake name to investigators, and the fake name was tied to his security company, Gomez Protection Detail.
Investigators also learned that neither Gilliam nor his company was registered through the North Carolina Department of Public Safety Private Protective Services as a registered armed security company, which is illegal in North Carolina.
Authorities arrested Gilliam at an Extended Stay on Owen Drive in Fayetteville. During his arrest, agents said they found a handgun on Gilliam, who they said was a convicted felon.
ALE agents later searched Gilliam’s home on Glensford Drive in Fayetteville. During the search, agents seized ten guns, including three stolen guns, a sawed-off shotgun and an AR-style rifle with an 8.5-inch barrel, which is considered a weapon of mass destruction.
ALE’s investigation also revealed that the bar’s ABC permit holder, Brittney Inman, as well as 11 Eleven employee Dormearnie Smith, failed to properly supervise the business and employed unlicensed security personnel at the bar. ALE said it would submit a violation report documenting its findings to the ABC Commission, which could result in fines, suspensions or the loss of the bar’s ABC permits.
“The Fairmont Police Department is committed to the safety of the citizens and visitors to our community. The relationship with our partners in law enforcement helps us to provide that safe community. We are extremely grateful to the hard-working members of the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Division who stepped in and assisted with this matter. Let me assure the citizens that this investigation is ongoing, and their concerns have not fallen on deaf ears,” said Fairmont Police Chief John Edwards.
ALE and Fairmont police charged Gilliam with the following:
- 13 counts of possession of a firearm by a felon.
- Two counts of possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
- Three counts of possession of a stolen firearm.
- Simple possession of a schedule II controlled substance.
- Discharging a firearm in the city.
- Resisting public officer.
- Injury to personal property.
- Go armed to terror the people.
“This arrest and the recovery of these firearms reflect our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of the public,” said ALE Director Bryan House. “This convicted felon misrepresented himself as a security professional and brought firearms into an environment where alcohol is sold and consumed – a combination that poses serious risks. We remain committed to working with our partners to support safe, responsible operations at ABC licensed businesses and to address any violation that threatens that standard.”
The North Carolina SBI and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office assisted ALE with their investigation.
