Speed, inexperience suspected in semi crash near Bighorn County


CHEYENNE, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation has issued an update regarding the accident that left a semi truck dangling over a cliff.

According to WYDOT, at approximately 2:35 a.m. on July 22, the Wyoming Highway Patrol was notified of debris in the highway near mile-marker 68 on US Highway 14a. Simultaneously, a Bighorn County Deputy arrived on the scene and discovered that a commercial motor vehicle had crashed near mile marker 71.

The commercial vehicle, a semi truck, was hanging off of the jersey barrier in the westbound lane over the edge of a steep hillside.

According to the release, the semi entered a curve at a speed faster than the advisory speed of 35 mph, The driver overcorrected and rolled to its passenger side, which caused the vehicle to then slide on the jersey barrier before going over the edge of the hillside barrier.

WYDOT reports that driver inexperience and speed are being investigated in the crash.

“As of 2 p.m. this afternoon (July, 22), this is an active scene, with lanes blocked at mile-marker 71, leading to a road closure on Highway 14a. The roads are expected to be open once more between 6 and 8 p.m. tonight.

The driver had only minor injuries and was able to safely extricate from the semi.
