SEATTLE — A person was fatally shot in the chest near the University of Washington’s campus in Seattle’s University District Thursday evening.
The UW first posted on its blog about the incident at 7:18 p.m., at 7:18 p.m., noting that there were reports of a shooting that occurred at NE 47th Street and 17th Avenue NE. The incident occurred near Pursuit Church, which was holding a large gathering and dinner in its parking lot at the time it occurred.
The church is located next to student and fraternity housing, which is why UW’s alert was triggered.
The UW’s blog post continued to note that the shooting suspect is described as a man dressed in a black hoodie, who reportedly fled the scene headed eastbound in a white sedan. According to the aforementioned blog post, the suspect drove eastbound on 50th Avenue NE.
Witnesses told KOMO News Reporter Ryan Simms that they heard several shots and believe the incident was a drive-by shooting.
“The victim in the shooting, which occurred near NE 47th Street and 17th Ave. NE has been pronounced dead at the scene,” wrote the UW. “The suspect vehicle is now reported to have fled northbound from that location.”
At 7:43 p.m., UW posted an update to its blog that read, “Police continue their investigation into the shooting death near NE 47th Street and 17th Ave. NE. There is not believed to be any ongoing threat in the area. Any additional information will be provided here if it becomes available.”
