PORTAGE, Wis. (WMTV) – A semi crash caused a diesel fuel spill on a bridge over the Wisconsin River, the Portage Fire Department said Wednesday.
Portage Fire Rescue responded before 5:20 a.m. Tuesday to Highway 33 for the crash and found a semi against the bridge sidewall. The semi was blocking a lane of traffic.

Firefighters determined the diesel fuel tank broke open, spilling fuel onto the bridge and into a storm sewer. Officials recounted putting a boom and oil dry down to hold off any more runoff until Blystone’s arrived. Crews used pads to soak up the fuel from the road.
Portage Fire Department said a small amount of fuel got into the river before crews arrived. A majority of the fuel was cleaned up.

EMS treated the driver involved and took the individual to a hospital for minor injuries.
Highway 33 was closed off while crews investigated.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources documented the fuel spill, the fire department added.
