A Braddock teen was arrested Wednesday for fatally shooting a second teen who police said tried to buy marijuana with a bag stuffed with fake cash during a January drug deal.
Police charged Khalil Valcin, 17, with homicide and a firearms count in the Jan. 4 shooting death of Dorrel Ferguson, 19.
Valcin, a Woodland Hills student, is being prosecuted as an adult.
Wilkinsburg police found Ferguson lying dead on the sidewalk around 8:25 p.m. that night outside 1023 Ross Ave., which stands a block off Lincoln Highway, according to a criminal complaint.
Ferguson, who was pronounced dead at 8:33 p.m., had been shot once in the neck.
Video showed Ferguson and another man — identified in court records only as Witness #1 — entering a convenience store at a nearby gas station about 15 minutes before Ferguson’s body was found, the complaint said.
They were there to buy marijuana from Valcin, police said, who had taken a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus to the meeting.
Ferguson exchanged a Giant Eagle tote bag with the person later identified as Valcin, as he was sitting at an electronic poker machines, the witness told police, according to the complaint. Video corroborated the witness’s account, police said.
While Ferguson appeared to walk out of the convenience store with marijuana, the bag he handed the man at the poker machines contained “fake money and weighted items,” the complaint said.
Another teen who was with Valcin that night told police Valcin was upset.
“He said that when they went outside, Khalil realized that there was not money in the bag, and that the male burned him,” the complaint said.
Valcin told his friend to go with him, and that they were going after the buyer, it continued.
The witness told police he thought that meant they were going to fight the buyer.
“Witness No. 3 said they chased the male down Ross Avenue, and that Khalil grabbed the black bag off the male, then shot him one time,” the complaint said.
The witness told police he didn’t know Valcin had a gun or that he would shoot the victim.
City cameras captured images of Valcin and the witnes running toward Ferguson after the exchange, the complaint said.
Police found no spent bullet casings at the scene, the complaint said. But, police said, witnesses led them to Valcin.
One witness told police Valcin played football at Woodland Hills High School, the complaint said. Several websites online identified Valcin as a quarterback for the Wolverines, set to enter his senior year this fall.
Woodland Hills officials did not respond Thursday to a phone call or emails seeking comment.
But Brian Tarrant, the Woodland Hills football coach, who took over the team in 2023, said he knew Valcin well.
“He’s like a son to me in a lot of ways,” the coach told TribLive on Thursday.
He described Valcin as an honest and genuine kid.
Tarrant said that when he took over the team, Valcin’s behavior improved.
“He cleaned his life up, got straight As,” the coach said.
Valcin played in every game, although his role for this season had not yet been set.
“He’s a beloved brother on this team,” the coach said.
Valcin had not been at any summer workouts because of work, Tarrant said. He said he had not seen him since the end of the school year.
“I just wish I could have helped him,” the coach said. “Khalil is a good kid, and despite what he’s (accused of), the law will settle things. We believe in him.”
Tarrant hasn’t yet talked to the team about what’s happened.
“I’m praying for both sides,” Tarrant said. “I wish I could have done more.”
Valcin was taken to the Allegheny County Jail Wednesday night, court records show. A judge denied him bail.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 8. His attorney was not listed Thursday in court records.
