FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) — An experienced pilot is safe after his military jet crashed in a Fresno County field.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Dickinson and Cadillac avenues.
NAS Lemoore says the F-35C fighter jet crashed not far from the base. Officials say the jet is a part of the VFA-125 “Rough Raiders.”
The pilot was able to eject safely and was taken to the hospital by a helicopter.
Fire and smoke were pouring out of the jet in the middle of a cotton field. Cal Fire was on scene to help extinguish the flames.
Once the fire is out, the military will be at the crash site around the clock to protect the jet.
Fresno County Supervisor Buddy Mendes owns the field where the F-35 went down.
Mendes says he received a call from his son telling him about the crash.
“I got a call from one of my sons at about 6:50 — that ‘hey, I think there’s a plane crash in our field, im gonna go out there and see.’ I was in my pajamas, so I put my clothes back on and came this way,” Mendes said.
No information has been released on what may have caused the stealth fighter jet to crash.
