Orange County deputies shoot man who ran while holding a gun, sheriff says

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Two Orange County deputies shot a man who allegedly ran away from them while holding a gun early Saturday, according to Sheriff John Mina.

The shooting happened around 1 a.m. as the deputies were assisting with a traffic detail near the intersection of Orlando Central Parkway and Presidents Drive, Mina said in a recorded statement.

“The deputes caught up to the man, who was still holding the gun, and our deputes discharged their service weapons, striking the man,” Mina said.

The deputies rendered first aid and the man was taken to the hospital, where he was in critical condition as of around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the sheriff.

Neither of the deputies were injured and have both been placed on paid administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates, he said.

“There is body-worn camera footage of the incident, which I have reviewed, and we will release that within 30 days,” Mina said. “(FDLE) will turn their findings over to the State Attorney’s Office, and once the State Attorney’s Office has completed their review, we will conduct our own internal investigation.”
