Oliver Gibson, former NFL defensive lineman, dead at 53


Former NFL defensive tackle Oliver Gibson has died at the age of 53, his family and Notre Dame announced on Tuesday

No cause of death has been reported yet.

Gibson was a fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame by the Steelers in the 1995 NFL Draft, spending four seasons in Pittsburgh before signing with the Bengals.

He played five seasons in Cincinnati before retiring from the league after the 2003 season. 

Over his nine-year NFL career, Gibson recorded 243 tackles, 17.5 sacks and 37 tackles for loss with one interception and two fumble recoveries.

After his playing days, Gibson got into coaching, becoming the head football coach at his alma mater, Romeoville High School in Illinois in 2014.

He was also an assistant basketball coach for the high school.

“RHS football is saddened by the passing of RHS legend on the field and former Head Football Coach Oliver Gibson. RIP, keep former Spartan @ZQGUNO4 and the rest of the family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” Romeoville Spartan Football wrote on X.

Gibson’s college alma mater also shared words after his death. 

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Oliver Gibson. We send our condolences to his family and friends,” Notre Dame wrote in a statement on Monday.

Gibson’s former teammate Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson took to social media to mourn his passing.
