SNOW SHOE — A shredded cheese spill left drivers in a stringy situation early Tuesday morning after a tractor-trailer hauling mozzarella burst open during a three-rig crash on Interstate 80 in Centre County.
Hundreds of boxes of mozzarella shut down a section of eastbound I-80 when another truck — carrying a full load of sanitation wipes — sideswiped the rig carrying the cheese, sending its entire load spilling across the roadway near Exit 133, Kylertown.
Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that three tractor-trailers were involved in the crash, which left behind a 200-yard debris field that required extensive cleanup. All eastbound lanes were blocked, prompting PSP to instruct Clearfield County officials to shut down the interstate at Exit 133 to relieve the traffic backlog and halt additional eastbound flow.
According to the Snow Shoe Fire Company, which was dispatched to the scene at 5:03 a.m., most of the mozzarella was cleared from the roadway by 7 a.m. However, a lane restriction remained in place for several hours as PennDOT finalized the cleanup.
To ensure the road was gouda for traffic to resume, PennDOT spread sand on the roadway to reduce any dairy-derived slickness — though we might’ve recommended flour instead.

No injuries or fuel leaks were reported, and there was no need for a hazmat response.
As for the mozzarella? All of it is headed to the landfill as the load was deemed unsalvageable after sitting for hours unrefrigerated.
Sadly, there will be no pizza party this time around — just a ‘grate’ big cleanup.
