COOK COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – A Henry County murder suspect is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on July 1 shortly after a pursuit with GSP ended in a PIT maneuver on I-75 in Cook County.
GSP said that a gunshot was fired from inside the suspect’s vehicle after the pursuit, as a trooper and Cook County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) deputies were conducting a traffic stop.
The suspect was later pronounced dead at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta due to a gunshot wound. GSP did not provide further details about this person or the murder case they are suspected of.
According to GSP, troopers saw the suspect’s vehicle headed south on I-75 near mile marker 45 at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday. The trooper followed the vehicle to mile marker 37, where GSP said CCSO deputies were staged. Near mile marker 34, GSP said the trooper performed a successful PIT maneuver, ending the pursuit. Then, officials attempted to conduct a traffic stop and heard the gunshot.
GSP said that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is conducting further investigation.
