Police said both the victim, 45-year-old Ohio woman Christine Moyer, and the alleged gunman, 76-year-old Stillman Valley man Roland Schmidt, were attending a wedding at the hotel.
Moyer left the event and Schmidt followed her outside before shooting her in the head, police said.
Police said Moyer was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she died.
A bystander subdued Schmidt on the ground and turned him over to police. Officers recovered a firearm from the scene.
Police said an investigation revealed that Schmidt was upset with Moyer over divorce paperwork she filed against his son.
Schmidt has been charged with first-degree murder and is due in court on Monday.
