MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – A Marquette Police Department officer was injured while pursuing an armed robbery suspect in Marquette Friday morning.
According to a press release from the MPD, officers responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Midjim Convenience Store at approximately 1:55 a.m.
Police say a 40-year-old man from Ishpeming robbed merchandise from the store while armed with a baseball bat.
Officers located the suspect outside the business still holding the bat. Police say the man put the bat down and initially began to follow commands until becoming noncompliant and running away when officers approached.
Police caught the suspect after a short foot pursuit. During the apprehension, the man punched an officer in the face before being brought into custody.
The officer was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of injuries and was released. The suspect was also taken to UPHS-Marquette for evaluation and was eventually lodged at the Marquette County Jail.
The suspect was arrested on multiple charges including:
- Robbery-Armed (life felony)
- Police Officer – Assaulting/ Resisting/ Obstructing Causing Injury (4-year felony)
- Four counts of Police Officer – Assaulting / Resisting / Obstructing (4-year felony)
- Retail Fraud – Third Degree (93-day misdemeanor).
The suspect’s name will not be released until arraignment. TV6 is working to find out when that is scheduled to take place.
