Increased police presence in Downtown Anchorage begins on Friday

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Following last week’s fatal shooting at the Gaslight Lounge, increased security measures will begin Friday night (July 25) on 4th Avenue.

Earlier in the week, the Anchorage Police Department announced that they would be doubling the number of officers, bagging parking meters, and running extra patrols.

According to Police Chief Sean Case, the measures are part of a new initiative that APD and local businesses were already in the process of developing, months prior.

Beginning at 10 p.m., parking meters along 4th Avenue, between G and H Street, will be bagged, and anyone who parks there could be towed.

APD said they have also assigned eight officers to the block, as opposed to the usual four, and around the time most bars close, they will be running extra patrols on the street, as well as behind the Gaslight Lounge.

Case said that some of the measures are temporary, but will remain for “the next several weeks,” though he did not give an exact time frame.

When asked on Friday, several of the businesses on and around the block say they were supportive of the new measures, and hope it prevents further crime in the area, like last week’s shooting.
