HERRIMAN, Utah (KUTV) — Several Herriman residents have evacuated their homes after an SUV plowed into a business and ignited a fire and massive explosion.
The explosion was captured on video, showing large chunks of debris flying high into the air.
Officials with the Herriman Police Department said the crash led to the explosion at 5200 West on 13400 South after 11 p.m. Saturday.
Video from the scene showed a white SUV up against the south side of the Domino’s Pizza location. A man who said he was the owner of the Domino’s location told KUTV his employees were able to get out of the building safely.
Several other businesses were also connected in the same building, including a Jimmy John’s to the west and Supercuts to the east.
Concerns over a possible natural gas leak led to evacuations in the nearby neighborhood.
A reverse 911 call went out to residents asking them to evacuate the area.
The evacuation included at least two streets of townhouses directly west of the fire.
“Residents of Terra (Luz) Lane and Parasol Lane should evacuate to a safe location due to concerns for a gas leak,” police said in a social media post,
They said other residents living close to the area didn’t need to evacuate, but should be prepared in the event circumstances changed.
Crews from the Herriman and Riverton fire departments were called to the scene, along with the Unified Fire Authority.
A notice was posted on Riverton’s Facebook residents asking people in theMonarch Meadows neighborhood to evacuate. As of 12:35 a.m., the order was lifted beyond a 100 foot radius from the fire.
Both directions of 13400 South were closed while crews worked to secure the scene.
