The MLB world is descending upon Atlanta this weekend as the Braves are hosting All-Star Weekend, which will culminate in Tuesday night’s main event: the 2025 MLB All-Star Game on Fox.
The American League is looking to defend its title from last year and secure what would be its 11th win in the last All-Star Games. But if the AL wants to win again in orthodox fashion, it will have to do so in nine innings.
MLB ALL-STAR GAME: Jacob Misiorowski’s MLB All-Star Game inclusion cheapens the honor
Unlike typical regular-season and postseason MLB games, the All-Star Game does not feature extra innings. Instead, the leagues came up with an even more interesting way to determine a winner if both squads are knotted up after nine innings: another Home Run Derby, baby!
That’s right, if the American and National League All-Stars are tied after nine innings, each team will select three players to compete in a makeshift derby. Each player will receive just three swings to try to hit as many homers as possible, and whichever squad sends more out of the park in those nine tries wins the tiebreaker — and therefore, the All-Star Game.
The rule has been in place for a few years now, after it was first instituted in 2022. So far, it hasn’t had to be utilized as the All-Star Games have been decided in regulation. But who knows — maybe this will be the year we finally get a look at what could be the most exhilarating overtime format in sports.
