PENSACOLA, Fla. — Tuesday marked one year since a deadly drive-by shooting at the Wedgewood Community Center.
Two men — ages 21 and 24 — were killed. Five others, including an 11-year-old, were injured.
A year later and the investigation is still ongoing. But one commissioner is dedicated to revamping the community.
There have been some safety measures implemented at the facility. It has been violence-free since the mass shooting.
Escambia County Commissioner Lumon May credits this to new safety precautions installed at the building.
The county took over the community center shortly after the shooting. Now, cameras are up and running on the outside of the premises.
New lights have also been installed, and more county personnel were hired to man the facility.
Commissioner May says he thanks God for this, in light of last year’s shooting.
“Quite frankly, some of the victims were young people that I knew, but we remain positive,” May said. “We remain thankful that God has not allowed for anything else to happen in that neighborhood. And we are just looking forward because we’ve just had a positive 12 months and we’re going to continue to keep on doing positive things in the Wedgewood Community.”
