A person was killed and three others seriously hurt in a crash on Route 3 in Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, Friday afternoon, state police said.
The highway remained closed more than an hour after the crash was reported, according to Massachusetts State Police, which was investigating along with local police.
Tyngsborough police had confirmed in a statement they were also responding to the crash, which “completely shut down” the area.
Footage from the scene showed a badly damaged car next to a damaged SUV in the middle of the highway. Police stopped traffic on one side of the road, backing up traffic.
A Medflight helicopter was seen on the highway, and Tyngsborough Fire said Boston Medflight was requested for one victim with significant injury.
State police said the crash was reported about 2:30 p.m. on highway, headed north, toward New Hampshire. It wasn’t immediately clear what led to the crash.
Tyngsborough Fire said in a statement that they responded to the serious motor vehicle collision on Route 3 north between Westford Road and Route 113 that involved four vehicles — two with heavy damage — and eight people.
According to Tyngsborough Fire, the victim who died was trapped in one of the heavily damaged vehicles and had no signs of life after experiencing blunt force trauma.
The severe traffic jam created challenges for arriving ambulances, Tyngsborough Fire said, but all patients with significant injuries were transported within 25 minutes of the first arriving crews.
The Tyngsborough Fire Department is asking people to keep the victims and families in their prayers.
