The Dallas Police Department said Sunday that it is investigating the death of a robbery suspect who died while in the custody of one of its officers.
The suspect, who was not immediately identified, died while being rushed to a local hospital, according to a police news release. Officials did not immediately say why the person needed treatment and a cause of death has also not yet been publicly disclosed.
According to the police statement, DPD officers were called to the 5600 block of Lemmon Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. for a robbery.
The responding officers arrested the suspect who was then transported for medical attention but was pronounced dead before arriving, the police statement said.
The area where the suspect was initially arrested is the site of several strip shopping centers that is home to several businesses, including a bank, a cell phone store and a Whatburger restaurant.
Police said the Dallas County district attorney’s office was notified about the death and will conduct its own review of the case.
