The Chapel Hill Police Department are investigating an armed carjacking on Franklin Street that occurred early Saturday morning.
Police responded to a report of a carjacking on E. Franklin Street near the North Estes Drive intersection at around 2:25 a.m. Saturday.
Police said three men stole a car from two people at gunpoint. There were no reports of injuries.
About two hours later, the stolen car was located and recovered in Durham.
Investigators are now working to identify and find the suspects. Chapel Hill police are also looking into any possible connections between this incident and an Armed robbery that occurred Thursday night.
At around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, police said a woman was grabbing cash from an ATM at the Bank of America on Willow Drive.
About ten minutes later, she arrived home where three men confronted her and robbed her at gunpoint, stealing cash and credit cards before fleeing. She was not injured.
A preliminary investigation determined the men followed her from the bank to her house.
Investigators are following leads into this incident as well and no additional information is available at this time. WRAL News is working to confirm more information.
Police encourage people to take safety measures including always locking their cars and keeping windows rolled up when not in the car.
They also shared other safety tips for people out and about:
- Call 911 if you believe someone is following you after you visit an ATM.
- Be aware of your surroundings. If you feel unsafe, don’t use the ATM.
- Be careful that no one can see you enter your PIN at the ATM.
