CAPTURED: Texas inmate who walked out of Bell County Jail is back in custody

Nicole Adele Gaffney, a woman who escaped from custody at the Bell County Jail on June 13 by fooling jail staff into believing she was an inmate set to be released, was taken into custody on June 16.

Gaffney was captured at about 3 p.m. and is being transported to the Bell County Jail.

“We thank the Bell County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office for their assistance in the apprehension,” the Bell County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a social media post.

Over the weekend, the Bell County District Attorney’s Office accepted a new charge of escape against Gaffney.

At about 12:25 p.m. on June 13, Gaffney simply “walked away from the Bell County Jail,” authorities said.

The security lapse at the Bell County Jail “is being actively investigated,” the sheriff’s office said, “It appears that protocols, procedures, and policy were not followed. This initial review has prompted the suspension of two jailers.”

Sheriff Bill Cooke is taking “full responsibility for the security lapse,” according to a social media post.
