BROKAW: ‘The One that Got Away’ is an intense murder mystery | News, Sports, Jobs

This six-episode mystery is filled with tense drama as two detectives wonder if the man they helped put away for the murder of two nurses 12 years earlier is really innocent after all. “The One that Got Away” stars Richard Harrington and Elen Rhys in this story of love, murder, mystery and family.

Twelve years ago, Detective Sergeant Rick Sheldon (Harrington) was engaged to Detective Inspector Ffion Lloyd (Rhys); however, his indiscretion with Helen (Rhian Blythe) resulted in an unexpected pregnancy and he ended up marrying her and starting a family. Ffion was brokenhearted but knew that was the right thing to do. She left to start her life in a new city. Now, she’s back in this quaint little Welch town to see if a copycat murderer is on the loose or if, by some chance, they got the wrong man in the first place.

As the episodes roll on, viewers see the attraction between Rick and Ffion is still there and he is torn between his life and love of Helen and his love for Ffion. This puts him in a difficult position when the two are now working closely to find this new murderer who looks to be a copycat of the man they focused on over a decade ago. But is this man, Paul Harvey (Ian Puleston-Davies), pulling the strings from his jail cell or is this a completely new murderer?

There are some strange circumstances that lead Ffion to believe Harvey might not have been the original murderer after all. The guilt she has that perhaps they got the wrong man is pulling at her and she cannot shake the idea. But Rick feels the opposite. He is convinced Paul Harvey is guilty and he is content that they got the right man all those years before.

Even though Rick knows in his heart that Harvey is guilty, Ffion cannot shake the feeling that they got it wrong. Although she does not know who the real murderer is, she feels deep in her soul that Harvey is not the man, or at least the lone murderer.

Twelve years ago, the double murder tore at the heartstrings of the little town. After all, two of their beloved nurses were brutally murdered. Rick still lives there and knows opening old wounds would shake the community again. But Ffion left and never saw how shattered the town was. She is now back and realizes she must do everything in her power to either find the original murderer, find the copycat and/or clear Paul Harvey. That is her goal, to the consternation of her boss, DCI Vaughan (Ioan Hefin), who wants the matter put to bed quickly and wants Harvey’s conviction to stand.

As Rick and Ffion delve into the people connected with the past and the present victims, their attraction for each other is undeniable. Will they succumb to their feelings or stay on track with the investigation?

With only six episodes in the series, it is a good show to binge over a weekend or a few evenings. It is dark, gritty and the characters are not that likable, but the mystery will have viewers second guessing whether Harvey killed those nurses years ago or if there is a murderer who got away scot-free.
