Blue Jays’ George Springer named American League Player of the Week

Though he wasn’t named to the All-Star Game, George Springer still is being recognized by MLB.

The Toronto Blue Jays outfielder was named the American League Player of the Week after helping his team to an eight-game win streak and a homestand sweep over the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels, the league announced Monday.

Springer, 35, was the Blue Jays’ sparkplug at the plate, hitting .429 (12-for-28) with five home runs, 13 RBI, nine runs scored a stolen base and a ridiculous 1.464 OPS last week.

Over the last week, Springer led MLB in RBI, tied for the league lead in total bases (27) and runs scored and came second in home runs.

He also had five consecutive multi-hit games during the seven-game stretch and set the Blue Jays record for RBIs on Canada Day with seven in a 12-5 win over the Yankees — a game that saw him hit two home runs.

This is the sixth time in Springer’s 12-year career that he has been named the AL Player of the Week. He won three times with the Blue Jays in 2021 and twice while playing for the Houston Astros.

After the stellar week, the New Britain, Conn. native is now batting .281 on the season with a team-high 16 home runs, 53 RBI and a .886 OPS.

He’s the first Blue Jay to win the award this season and the first since Bowden Francis in August of 2024 to take it home.

Chicago Cubs first baseman Michael Busch and Philadelphia Phillies ace Zack Wheeler were co-winners of the award in the National League.
