BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has been added to a petition filed by attorneys representing the family of Jabari Peoples.

The petition asks courts to intervene and allow the Peoples family to view the bodycam footage from the night Jabari died.

ALEA has denied the family’s request to see the video, citing the ongoing investigation.

The amended filing comes after the City of Homewood asked a judge to dismiss the request last week saying ALEA had taken over the investigation and needed to be added to the petition as the custodian of the bodycam footage.

The new filing states that the amended petition has been framed as narrowly as possible to satisfy the rigorous requirements under Alabama law.

It goes on to say critical evidence – the officer’s body-worn camera footage – remains inaccessible and at risk of permanent withholding.
