Aisha Braveboy insists new PGPD chief will be local if current leader accepts Phoenix job

Just days after naming a new interim superintendent for Prince George’s County Schools, County Executive-Elect Aisha Braveboy appears poised to appoint a new police chief as well.

Monday evening in Phoenix, Arizona, current Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz will participate in a public, live-streamed, moderated forum with two other finalists to become chief of that city’s police force.

If Aziz wins the job, Braveboy has said she is prepared to name a replacement.

In an exclusive interview with 7News, Braveboy told Maryland Bureau Chief Brad Bell that any new chief would be a local.

“I believe very strongly that if I am in a position to elect or select a new chief, that that chief will be someone who’s come up through the ranks of this department in Prince George’s County,” said Braveboy.

Aziz came to the county from the Dallas, Texas police department. His top deputy also came from Texas.

At times, Aziz has clashed with long-time county police, as well as Braveboy.

He has publicly expressed frustration with the criminal justice system for failing to hold accountable repeat offenders arrested by his officers during the time that Braveboy had been serving as State’s Attorney.

While Braveboy has not said she will remove Aziz if he doesn’t leave on his own, multiple sources have told 7News she has spoken to a number of candidates to replace him.

When she introduced Dr. Shawn Joseph as interim Superintendent of Public Schools, just hours after the Board of Education announced the departure of current Superintendent Millard House, she said she was similarly prepared to act quickly if Aziz leaves. “

“If the chief is no longer here, I certainly will be ready to appoint a new chief,” she said, “And I think what I will say to the department for the men and women who work in the department is that I see them, I know how hard they work. I believe in our department, I believe in the training that the officers have received in Prince George’s County.”
