The skyscraper where the deadly shooting occurred on Monday has long been a home for major multinational companies, located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, where corporate staff flow in and out of every day.

The building, 345 Park Avenue, is owned by Rudin Management, which bills itself as one of the largest privately owned real estate companies in the city.

The company, founded in 1925, has management offices on the 33rd floor of the building – the floor police say the gunman went to after beginning his attack in the lobby. Once on the 33rd floor, he opened fire and killed one person, before dying of a self-inflicted shot, police say.

The building also houses the offices of the National Football League (NFL), global investment firm Blackstone, tax and audit firm KPMG, and a Bank of America center, according to police and real estate listings.

The 44-storey skyscraper opened in 1969 and occupies an entire city block between 51st and 52nd Street, spanning 1.9 million square feet, according to the building listing on Rudin’s website. It’s one of the few buildings in the city with its own zip code, according to Rudin.

It’s located just a few blocks from iconic New York City sites like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Rockefeller Center and the Waldorf Astoria hotel. It’s also surrounded by major buildings and institutions, with Sotheby’s Institute of Art across the street to the south and the Seagram Building to the north.
