Police are investigating an attempted bank robbery in Ballston and an attempted carjacking near Columbia Pike.
The incidents both happened last Thursday.
Around 10 a.m. on the 800 block of N. Randolph Street, a man passed a note to a bank teller demanding cash, but left empty-handed and fled in a car, according to an Arlington County Police Department crime report.
A 61-year-old suspect was arrested the next day by D.C. police. More, below, from the crime report.
ATTEMPTED BANK ROBBERY, 2025-07240079, 800 block of N. Randolph Street. At approximately 10:00 a.m. on July 24, police were dispatched to the report of a robbery. Upon arrival, it was determined the male suspect entered the bank and allegedly passed a note to the teller that demanded money and implied he had a weapon. The suspect then walked out of the bank, without any cash, and fled the scene in a vehicle. No weapon was seen or displayed, and no injuries were reported. During the course of the investigation, the suspect was identified, and he was subsequently located and detained in Washington D.C. on July 25 with the assistance of the Metropolitan Police Department. Tyrone Fitzgerald Hines, 61, of Suitland, Md. was arrested and charged with Attempted Robbery.
Also in the crime report, a pair of suspects — at least one of whom was armed — allegedly tried to carjack a man who was parked on the street along the 4500 block of S. Four Mile Run Drive. They stole the man’s wallet and electronics but were unable to steal the car, according to ACPD.
ATTEMPTED CARJACKING (Late), 2025-07240265, 4500 block of S. Four Mile Run Drive. At approximately 11:28 p.m. on July 24, an officer responded to the police station for the late report of a robbery. It was reported the male victim parked his vehicle on the street and was walking in the area when he was approached by two male suspects, one of which displayed a firearm. The suspects stole the victim’s wallet, electronics and attempted to steal the victim’s vehicle before fleeing the scene on foot. No injuries were reported. The suspects are described as Black males. Suspect One is described as approximately 6’2”- 6’4” tall and approximately 35-40 years old. Suspect Two is described as approximately 5’7”-5’9” tall and approximately 30 years old. The investigation is ongoing.
