Brewers alumni home run derby is a hit
The Milwaukee Brewers held an alumni home run derby as part of their 25th anniversary celebration of American Family Field on July 25, 2025.

With the bases loaded and the count full in a tie game in the bottom of the ninth, Perkins smacked a walk-off single to the warning track in center field to send the Brewers to a 3-2 win that avoided a frustrating sweep at the hands of the pesky Miami Marlins on July 27 at American Family Field.

The rally began when Eric Haase’s bat died a hero, with the Brewers backup catcher’s duck snort landing just in front of a charging Dane Myers in center field. Brice Turang followed by cueing a double just inside the third-base bag, which the Marlins followed by intentionally walking Jackson Chourio to load the bases.
Perkins worked a full count against Marlins left-hander Cade Gibson before lacing a sinker down the middle 100.2 mph off the bat for a no-doubt walk-off hit, the second of his career.
Andrew Vaughn comes through in the clutch
This time, Andrew Vaughn’s missile to center didn’t find the web.
One at-bat after lacing a 106 mph rocket that Marlins center fielder Dane Myers ran down, the Brewers first baseman launched a fly ball that landed over his head for a game-tying, ground-rule double with two away in the eighth.
Moments prior, pinch runner Blake Perkins swiped second base, which proved to be a critical play as Vaughn’s ball bounded off the warning track and over the fence in center for an automatic two bases.
Aaron Ashby nabs two runners
You don’t often see what Aaron Ashby pulled off in the seventh inning, putting two runners on with walks and promptly erasing them during the next at-bat without a ball in play.
With one out, Ashby picked Dane Myers off second base with Brice Turang provided a major assist by picking the lefty’s throw out of the dirt and slapping a tag on Myers’ hand.
After throwing two pitches to Eric Wagaman, Ashby then nabbed Xavier Edwards, who was caught stealing second – even if it didn’t go down in the scorebook as a pick-off because Edwards was running already when Ashby threw over to first.
Offense comes up short again
An offense that has been stuck in mud all series had another letdown in a high-leverage moment. After Isaac Collins’ one-out single put runners on the corners with one out in the sixth, Caleb Durbin hit a one-hopper to second base on the first pitch he saw from reliever Valente Bellozo for a 4-6-3 double play to keep Miami in front, 2-1.
Brandon Woodruff delivers more quality
Another outing, another quality start for Brandon Woodruff.
For the third time since returning from the injured list, Woodruff went at least six innings and kept the opponents to two or fewer runs, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out six in his second go-round against the Marlins this month.
Woodruff relied heavily on his fastball mix, as his two-seamer, four-seamer and cutter accounted for all but 21 of 85 pitches.
The three walks Woodruff allowed were his first three of the year and he only had two three-up, three-down innings, but managed to work through six fairly efficiently by stranding five Marlins and holding them to 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.
Jackson Chourio pushes hitting streak to 20 games
Only five players in franchise history had achieved a 20-game hitting streak as Jackson Chourio strolled to the dish in the third inning. Moments later, it became six.
Chourio tied the game at 1-1 by roping a double down the left-field line with two outs in the third, scoring Eric Haase from first. Chourio became the first Brewers hitter since Ryan Braun in 2011 to register a hit streak of at least 20 games, as well as only the 13th player since 1901 21 years or younger to do so.
As has been the thorn in the Brewers’ side all series, though, Miami immediately responded with Heriberto Hernandez, who had three homers all year coming in, going deep for the second time in as many days to reclaim a one-run lead.
Another pesky Marlins inning to kick things off
The Brewers will not be sad in the slightest to see the Marlins’ charter take off from Mitchell International later in the evening.
As they’ve done all series, they scrapped their way to some offense in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Xavier Edwards laced the first pitch from Woodruff for a double, moved to third on a grounder and scored after Agustin Ramirez walked and Kyle Stowers cued a single to left.
The Brewers have held a lead for all of three total outs in the field in this series.
