MONROE, N.C. (WBTV) – Monroe police officers arrested a teenager Sunday morning after an armed robbery near the J. Ray Shute Center.
Police said it happened along East Green Street around 11:15 a.m., where the victim reported being approached by a teen who pointed a gun at him and demanded personal property.
The victim was able to identify the suspect as Jakeem Mungo, 16, from Monroe. The victim and Mungo knew each other, police said.
As officers began a K-9 track in the area, police said Mungo exited a nearby home, saw the approaching officers, and immediately surrendered, pleading for the K-9 not to be deployed. He was found to have the property that had just been reported stolen, police said.
A search of the home led to the recovery of the gun described by the victim. The gun was later confirmed to have been reported stolen from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s jurisdiction, according to police.
Because the crime involved was robbery with a dangerous weapon, police said Mungo will be charged as an adult. He’s currently being held in a secure juvenile detention facility where a judge will set his conditions of release.
