LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. – A three-car crash on I-96 this week near the border of Oakland and Livingston counties left one person dead, another injured, and thousands stuck on the freeway.

Here’s what we know about the crash.

Crash details

At about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2025, troopers were called to I-96 at Kensington Road in Brighton Township for a crash involving three vehicles.

Police said a 19-year-old man from Detroit was heading west on I-96 in a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu. Michigan State Police believe he was going over 100 mph.

Witnesses told police that before the crash, the car was in the right lane and then swerved into the middle lane and hit another vehicle.

Both of those cars lost control, and a third was struck. That collision caused the Malibu to overturn and hit a construction traffic trailer, according to state police.

1 killed, 1 injured

The 19-year-old Malibu driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the other drivers suffered minor injuries.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, and at this time, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors, according to police.

Traffic backup

Drivers were asked to avoid the area.

“Westbound I-96 at Kensington Rd will be closed for an unknown amount of time as troopers have requested an accident investigator to the scene to assist with the investigation,” MSP said in the release.

It caused a miles-long backup for drivers, which can be seen in the video below:
