The pilot of a small airplane died in a crash Friday morning at the airport in Dillingham in Southwest Alaska, according to a statement from the Alaska State Troopers.

Authorities were notified of the crash at about 9:15 a.m., troopers said. The pilot, an adult male, was the only person on the plane, a Piper J3C-65 Cub, the statement said. He was declared dead at the scene, according to troopers.

The plane had crashed on the runway, according to troopers.

Next-of-kin notifications are in process, and the man’s body is being sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy, the statement said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will respond and investigate the crash, troopers said.
