Virginia men arrested for allegedly shooting down drone

FAUQUIER COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – Two men were arrested for allegedly shooting down a drone flying above a residence, according to the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office.

The drone operator was searching for a lost dog in Fauquier County when the drone flew over a property; one of the men allegedly fired multiple gun shots hitting and bringing the drone down, said sheriff’s investigators.

One man was charged with Destruction of Property and Reckless Handling of a Firearm; the accomplice was arrested and charged with Obstruction of Justice during the investigation, according to Fauquier County Sheriff’s investigators.

According to Virginia State Police, it is illegal to shoot at a drone.

The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office is reminding everybody that shooting at a drone is “very dangerous” as the bullet could damage property or possibly take somebody’s life.

If you are concerned about a low flying drone hovering over your property, then try to take a photo or otherwise obtain the UAV’s registration number. Then report it to your local law enforcement office, said the sheriff’s office.
