Suspect indicted nearly one year after car crash kills Army veteran

A Beaumont man indicted in connection with a fatal crash that killed a veteran and critically injured his wife has been released Wednesday after posting bond.

Larry Fletcher, 32, was indicted by a grand jury last week on charges of Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon and Manslaughter. Fletcher posted a $100,000 bond and was released from the Jefferson County Jail this afternoon.

The crash occurred on September 18 at the intersection of Brooklyn and Grant in South Beaumont. According to court documents, Arthur Thomas, 58, and his wife had just left a Bible study around 8:30 p.m. when their vehicle was struck by Fletcher’s Cadillac.

Police said the “black box” from Fletcher’s vehicle provided key evidence leading to the indictment. The device showed Fletcher was traveling at 72 miles per hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone. The court documents state that Thomas, who was driving, stopped at a stop sign before pulling into the intersection, where he was struck by Fletcher’s vehicle. The traffic investigator noted that vehicles on the side of the roadway would have prevented Thomas from judging Fletcher’s speed. Fletcher reportedly applied his brakes only one and a half seconds before the impact.

Arthur Thomas, who served in the Army for about 25 years both in the U.S. and overseas, died at a hospital following the crash. His wife suffered critical injuries and will require constant care for the rest of her life.

If convicted, Fletcher could face two to 20 years in prison on each charge.
