Daniil Medvedev has a fantastic opportunity after a major rival loses at the Washington Open

Daniil Medvedev’s 2025 ATP Tour campaign has not gone to plan.

The Russian has been performing far from his best on the court, recording only one victory at three Grand Slam events this year.

To make matters worse, Medvedev was told he sounded a ‘little bit deluded’ after crashing out of Wimbledon in round one to Benjamin Bonzi.

However, the Russian’s best surface is hard court. After all, Medvedev’s sole Grand Slam title came at the 2021 US Open. We are now entering an American swing where the surface is prevalent, which could work to Medvedev’s advantage.

Medvedev, who is competing at the Washington Open this week, has been presented with a big opportunity to turn his season around.

Daniil Medvedev could win his first title in over two years after Lorenzo Musetti crashes out of Washington

Cameron Norrie may have given Daniil Medvedev the antidote to revive his 2025 campaign. The Brit defeated the number two seed in Washington, winning 3-6 6-2 6-3.

With Holger Rune withdrawing from the competition at the last moment, and Musetti’s shocking departure, the door has opened for Daniil Medvedev to win his first ATP Tour title in over two years.

Over two years ago, Daniil Medvedev usurped Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune on his way to a first clay court title at the Italian Open. The Russian had been on a superb run of form, capping it off with a 7-5 7-5 victory over Rune.

The 2023 Italian Open marked Medvedev’s 20th title on the ATP Tour, and he has failed to add to that total since.

Aside from Alex de Minaur, Medvedev is now the highest-ranked player in his half of the draw. If he can beat big-serving Reilly Opelka, he will then face either Yibing Wu or 10th seed and defending Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin.

Medvedev’s semi-final opponent could be one of a few names, including Dan Evans, Cameron Norrie, or Alex de Minaur. While these are all great players, they have not achieved the heights that the Russian has throughout his career.

Therefore, Medvedev has a superb opportunity to reach the final and possibly win his first title in over two years.

He may well face one of Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton or Frances Tiafoe at the final hurdle. Despite his recent form, Medvedev still has the tools to defeat any one of these players.

Daniil Medvedev’s impressive 2023 campaign

It has been over two years since Daniil Medvedev’s last tour title. However, it is worth revisiting his past triumphs to acknowledge the tennis level that still remains innate within the Russian.

During the first half of 2023, Medvedev secured an impressive five ATP Tour titles, including two Masters 1000 titles.

Daniil Medvedev’s 2023 ATP Tour titles Opponent in Final
Masters 1000 Rome beat Holger Rune 7-5 7-5
Masters 1000 Miami beat Jannik Sinner 7-5 6-3
Dubai Tennis Championships (ATP 500) beat Andrey Rublev 6-2 6-2
Qatar Open (ATP 250 at the time) beat Andy Murray 6-4 6-4
Rotterdam Open (ATP 500) beat Jannik Sinner 5-7 6-2 6-2

This run included two victories in finals over Jannik Sinner, one each over Holger Rune and Andrey Rublev, and another against two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray.

If he can find some form at the Washington Open, the Russian may add to these titles.
