Rochester family gets justice 7 years after woman’s horrific murder

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Justice has been served seven years after the brutal murder of a woman in Monroe County.

52-year-old Tracy Henton-Williams, a beloved sister, mother, and grandmother, was stabbed in the neck and chest by her ex-boyfriend, 61-year-old Roger Wiggins, while he was driving on Buffalo Road in Gates June 11, 2018, according to prosecutors.

She then reportedly fell out of the moving car. Bystanders rushed to try to save her life, but she later died from her injuries at Strong Memorial Hospital, police said.

Wiggins was stopped several hours later at the Canadian border.

He was finally sentenced Monday to 25 years to life behind bars after a jury found him guilty of Tracy’s murder.

Tracy’s family said they’ve waited years for this day.

“We thought that this situation had ended in terms of what was going to happen to him and the criminal justice system,” said Alia Henton-Williams, Tracy’s sibling, “and then for us to receive the news last year that he was gonna be moving forward with the trial, that was devastating. It was almost as devastating as the day that I was told that she had been killed.”

The family said just before Tracy was murdered, she broke off her two-year relationship with Wiggins.

“I think what’s most important for myself and my sister is to continue to thrive and live a life of abundance and happiness and joy, and not let this cripple us,” said Takia Cushnie, Tracy’s daughter. “I always say I wanna give my mother the best show ever.”

Cushnie said the loss of her mother has forever left a gaping hole in her heart.

“My children, only one of them really has a memory of my mother,” she said, “one wasn’t even born, so he’s never gotten a chance to meet her. And my daughter doesn’t remember her, and so my children have to grow up without their grandmother, never getting a chance to hug.”

“She was just such a ray of light in any room that she walked into,” Alia added.

Tracy was not the first person the family lost to violence.

In 1992, her 16-year-old brother, Ralik, was caught in gang crossfire in Rochester and was fatally shot four times while walking home from church.

“I thank God for the closeness of my tribe,” Alia continued, “and I thank God that we support each other and that we can still smile and move forward and try to help the community in spite of all that we’ve lost.”

The family said even though Tracy’s killer received the maximum sentence, no number of years will bring her back.

Police said Wiggins has a lengthy criminal history in Florida dating back to 1980, including arrests for drug possession, battery with a deadly weapon, and stealing a car.
