Sheriff’s office piecing together fatal shooting of Ole Miss football player. What we know

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office does not currently have suspects for a Cordova shooting that left four people injured and one person dead, Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner said during a press conference on July 21.

Detectives have returned to the scene of the crime to track down more information, he said, and asked for neighbors to speak up about what they saw.

According to Buckner, the shooting came after a pool party in Cordova. Earlier that day, he added, deputies were called out for a noise complaint. He said the party’s host was able to quiet things down.

But, he said, when the party ended, “the attendees spilled into the cul-de-sac, and gunfire erupted.” At least five people were shot by “more than 40 rifle and pistol” rounds. Those casings were found by detectives at the scene.

“We have far more questions right now than we have answers,” Buckner said during the press conference. “We know that more than 100 people were attending this party, so we know people saw something or heard something. There are houses, other houses around, where this pool party was held. So what we need — let’s start with neighbors. If anyone near this location has surveillance video, we’re asking that you please contact our detectives at (901 )222-5600. We need to review that footage to find out if there’s any pieces of evidence that we can use from that camera.”

Buckner did not confirm what weapons the rounds came from, and said investigators are looking for “one or more” suspects in the killing. He said there are currently “no indications that there was an exchange” of gunfire outside the party, only that there were “at least two or three different weapons.”

Who was killed during the shooting in Cordova?

Corey Adams, an 18-year-old football player at the University of Mississippi, was shot around 10:14 p.m. on July 19 outside a home on Fern Glade Cove in Cordova. The sheriff’s office said deputies arrived at the intersection of Forest Hill-Irene and Walnut Grove and stopped a car with Adams inside.

Deputies attempted to treat Adams at the intersection until Shelby County Fire Department medical personnel arrived. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

“Deputies found multiple shell casings and learned that four adult males arrived by personal vehicles to area hospitals with gunshot wounds. All four victims are listed in non-critical condition,” SCSO said in a post to X, formerly Twitter.

Buckner, during the press conference, did not say how long it took for deputies and medical personnel to arrive on the scene, saying he would use the “term immediately when the call came out” to describe the office’s response.

He also declined to identify the individuals who were injured in the shooting, aside from calling them adult men.

Three of the four men who were injured in the shooting have since been released from the hospital, Buckner said during the July 21 press conference. The fourth was still in the hospital, he said.

Standing beside Buckner during the press conference were Adams’ family members. People identifying themselves as Adam’s mother and younger brother — and were also identified by SCSO officials as such — both spoke during the press conference about Adams’ love for football and his family. The mother requested she not be named, but an Ole Miss football bio for Adams identified his mother as Chantrel Bernhart.

“My son was my all,” the mother said through tears during the press conference. “He didn’t deserve it. He wasn’t in the street. He wasn’t doing anything besides pursuing his dream of becoming an NFL player. And he was doing a phenomenal job and they took it from him. They took it from him. I didn’t get to see him fulfill his dreams. I’m just — I’m begging for somebody to please, please just come forth and help. I can’t give my son the rest of what I wanted to give him in life, but the least I can do is give him justice.”

His mother added that Adams was not at the party for long — just about 10 minutes — before it ended. Adams’ younger brother called him a “role model.”

“The day before my brother got killed, I was on the phone with him talking about practice, how it was going and he told me he loved me,” the brother said. “He told me, ‘I love you kid,’ for the last time the day before. Now he’s gone. I’ll never be able to hear those words again. I’m gonna live by the example he set for me and live my life how he wanted, fulfill my dream for me and for both of us.”

Who was Corey Adams?

Adams was set to start his first year of football with Ole Miss this fall. He moved to Oxford in January, an early enrollment, to take part in the team’s spring practice.

Adams played defensive end.

“We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away,” Ole Miss Football said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter. “While our program is trying to cope with his tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Buckner encouraged anyone with information about the shooting to call CrimeStoppers at (901) 528-2274 or the sheriff’s office directly at (901) 222-5600.

In response to the shooting, SCSO deputies have been told to increase patrols in the area, Buckner said. He added that shootings are “not something that is common for that community” and that investigators are looking into the party itself.

“There could be some additional charges that come from that, but right now we’re putting all of these issues on the table, but our main focus right now is getting justice for Corey,” Buckner said.
