Vallejo police arrested a man in connection with the shooting death of a Vallejo woman earlier this month, according to police.
In the early morning of July 5, 45-year-old Courtney Whitney was struck by an apparent stray bullet while in her home at 433 Admiral Callaghan Way, and later died at a local hospital. Police identified 42-year-old Vallejo resident Jose Guadalupe Castillo as a suspect in the shooting.
Patrol officers arrested Castillo without incident at a convenience store on Wednesday, according to a department press release. An officer also found a firearm with an extended magazine at the scene where Castillo had been standing prior to his arrest. He was initially charged with felony possession of a firearm, according to police.
Castillo was booked into Solano County Jail on the felony firearm charge Wednesday, and was later charged by the Solano County District Attorney’s Office with second-degree murder and other felonies, according to jail records. Castillo was out on bail at the time of the shooting for negligent discharge and possession of a firearm stemming from an arrest in May, according to police.
Castillo is being held without bail and is represented by the Solano County Public Defender’s Office, according to public records. Spokespeople for the public defender’s office and Vallejo Police Department were not immediately available for comment.
Whitney’s death marked the eighth homicide in Vallejo this year.
