Four dead, 21 injured in massive multi-vehicle crash involving small bus


UPDATE (8:40 P.M.) – The death toll has now risen to four people, according to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office. The suspects remain at large.

SAN ANTONIO – A large multi-vehicle crash on a South Side highway has left two dead and 21 people hospitalized.

Around 3 p.m. on Thursday, a major accident was reported along the southbound lanes of I-35 near Palo Alto Road on the South Side, near Somerset Road.

According to Bexar County Fire, two people have died, and eight people have been transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 13 others have been hospitalized as a precaution.

“Just about an hour ago, we had a stolen white Camaro south on 35 speeding wrecked into a small transport bus carrying a trailer,” said Police Chief McManus. “As a result of that crash, two individuals are dead. 18 have been transported to hospitals. The age range of the individuals transported were young children to senior adults, and the two individuals who are deceased are senior adults as well.”

In a Facebook post a transportation company named Transpotes Guerra confirmed the transportation bus involved in the crash belonged to them. They area asking anyone who is concerned about relatives who were involved in the crash to contact them at 830-319-5168, 862-109-7187, or 682-758-1055. The bus was traveling from Fort Worth to Mexico.

Traffic in the area is still closed off as crews work to clear the area and tend to the injured.

“There’s four individuals that fled from the vehicle,” said McManus. “One was armed with an AK rifle.”

The public has been advised to avoid the area while police search for the suspects at large.
