Man fatally shot brother, then himself in North Platte

Shooting arrest

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating a murder-suicide in North Platte.

Early Saturday morning, local law enforcement asked the patrol for help at the scene of a barricaded suspect.

According to officials, the suspect shot and killed his brother inside the home near West Second Street and Sherman Avenue.

The patrol said the suspect, 39-year-old James Kemp, was also refusing to allow his 11-year-old son to leave the home.

After several hours of negotiation, authorities said Kemp let his son leave. The boy was taken into protective care.

Around 9:45 a.m., shortly after the child left, law enforcement said they heard a gunshot coming from the home.

Officers then entered the home and found Kemp dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kemp’s brother, 37-year-old Christopher Kemp, was also found dead from a gunshot wound.

According to officials, no officers fired any shot at any point during the standoff.

Because officers were present outside the home at the time of the suicide, it is considered an in-custody death, so a grand jury will investigate.
