Hamilton Police Identify Suspect in Fatal Downtown Shooting

Hamilton Police have identified the suspect in the brazen daylight shooting that occurred on Friday, July 11, 2025, in the area of King Street East and James Street North.

At approximately 5:25 p.m., a male suspect encountered a group of three individuals in the downtown core who appear to have been the intended targets. The male suspect opened fire, striking one of the individuals. As he continued to shoot at a second person, an innocent bystander—26-year-old Belinda Sarkodie—was fatally struck.

Following the investigation, police have now identified the male suspect as 17-year-old Mackale LAVOIE. A warrant has been issued for the following charges:

  • Second Degree Murder
  • Attempted Murder x2

Police have obtained an order permitting the publication of  Mackale LAVOIE’s identity, who remains at large. 

Members of the public are urged not to approach him. If you see Mackale LAVOIE or know of his whereabouts, please contact Hamilton Police Service immediately at 905-546-4925 or call 9-1-1.

The investigation remains ongoing.
