Nonprofit hosts event following fatal teen shooting in Wyoming

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in Wyoming, which prosecutors describe as a gun deal gone wrong between the two teenagers.

The incident highlights the growing concern over youth violence, said Mitch Morris, a local activist.

“It’s such a tragic, tragic road once you start to try to carry that pistol. It’s a road. I don’t think that any of them really understand what could happen to them with that,” said Morris, who leads the organization Save Our Youth Kings and Queens.

To raise awareness about the impact of gun violence, Morris’s nonprofit displayed body bags in front of the West End Apartments on Linn Street, symbolizing lives lost to gun violence this summer. The organization also hosted a cookout with police officers present.

“Whenever you lose a loved one to this gun violence, it’s hard on our city and our communities. So, we brought the body bags out today to bring awareness. We’re asking folks to come and celebrate life with us. The body bags are one thing to show what’s happening in our community, but we want to celebrate life,” Morris said.

While Morris is uncertain about what led the teenagers in the Wyoming case to obtain a gun, he emphasized the importance of parental vigilance.

“You try to get your kids a little responsibility to catch the bus and go here to go to the friend or whatever, but right now, it says this is not the season for that. You have to stay on top of your kids, check their drawers, check their book bags, and see who they’re hanging out with. I mean, you just got to keep them real close,” Morris said.

The teenage suspect, who has no prior criminal record, is currently charged as a juvenile. Prosecutors intend to seek to try him as an adult. The victim has been identified as Jaymir Hill.
