Kicking off a weekend of events celebrating Jerry and The Grateful Dead Jerry Garcia Commemorative Street Sign Ceremony

Kicking off the weekend of events celebrating Jerry Garcia and the 60th Anniversary of The Grateful Dead is the Jerry Garcia commemorative street sign ceremony at Harrington Street on Friday, August 1 at 11am (time subject to change). The ceremony, taking place on Jerry’s birthday, will be on Harrington Street between Alemany Boulevard and Mission Street in the Excelsior District where Garcia was born and lived with his grandparents. Trixie Garcia, Jerry’s daughter, and Jerry Day founder Tom Murphy are confirmed to attend. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and other special guests are also expected to attend.

The 23rd Annual Jerry Day, celebrating Jerry’s contributions to music and the City, is on Saturday, August 2 at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park, featuring Melvin Seals and JGB with fiddle player Mads Tolling, and Stu Allen & Mars Hotel. Following the show, After Party events and an Excelsior Market will take place along the Excelsior Corridor. Meanwhile, Dead & Co performs three shows at Golden Gate Park August 1-3 and Grahame Leshe & Friends will host three shows at Pier 48 in Mission Rock, July 31-August 2.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel says, “Jerry Day is a uniquely San Francisco celebration—rooted right here in the Excelsior, where Jerry Garcia grew up, and carried forward each year by the neighbors, artists, and small businesses who make this city so special. This free, homegrown tribute in McLaren Park brings generations of fans together and shows that San Francisco’s creative spirit isn’t just history—it’s alive in every neighborhood.”

Over the course of his lifetime, Jerry Garcia (1942-1995) became one of the most influential and revered musicians of all time, whose memory continues to unite people in their love of music. Most famously Jerry helped found the world-renowned band The Grateful Dead 60 years ago in 1965.
