Allentown shooting: Driver kills man who attacked car with baseball bat, DA says

A man fatally shot another man who forced his car to the curb, and then attacked him with a baseball bat on Sunday in Allentown, authorities said.

A man driving an Audi overtook another man driving a Prius just before 3:40 a.m. heading west on Hamilton Street in the city’s downtown, according to a news release from the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.

As the vehicles crossed Fifth Street, authorities said the Audi forced the Prius to the curb. Then the Audi driver got out of his car and swung a metal baseball bat at the Prius drivers’ side door, the DA’s office said.

Then, the Prius driver shot the Audi driver, authorities said.

The 35-year-old Audi driver was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Salisbury Township, where he was pronounced dead just after 4:50 p.m. at the hospital, the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office said.

No charges were filed and the case, according to the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office.

The Prius driver drove about a block and a half away from the shooting scene and called 911, authorities said. He remained there until police arrived and turned over his legally-owned 9 mm handgun to police, authorities said.

Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio said the cause and manner of death will be determined following an autopsy, however, a preliminary investigation indicates the victim died from the gunshot wound. The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office is withholding the dead man’s identity until the autopsy is completed.

Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin P. Holihan and Allentown Police Chief Charles Roca announced the fatal shooting Sunday morning.

Investigators obtained video surveillance footage of the incident. The DA’s office said the Audi had two occupants and the Prius had one occupant.

The case was investigated by Allentown Police Department Det. Sgt. Damian Murray and Det. Jonathan Manning; the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force; the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office; and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office.
