Detroit Police fatally shoot teen who allegedly shot officer

DETROIT, MI – A 16-year-old was shot and killed by police Thursday night, July 3, after allegedly shooting an officer in the area of Neff Street and Conner.

Detroit police officers from the ninth precinct were on routine patrol about 10:30 p.m. Thursday when they encountered three masked individuals standing next to a building, Detroit Police Chief Todd A. Bettison said in a video posted to the Detroit Police Department’s Facebook page Friday, July 4. Bettison said there had been a rash of breaking and entering incidents in the area.

Officers stopped to investigate and detained one of the individuals, a 16 year old, while a foot pursuit ensued with the other two, Bettison said.

While police were trying to detain a second suspect, also 16, a “brief struggle” occurred before the suspect grabbed a handgun and shot a police officer in the left hand. Police officers then returned fire, killing the suspect, Bettison said. He did not say whether the fatally wounded suspect was male or female.

Police did not find the third suspect, a male whose age is unknown, Bettison said.

Michigan State Police and the Detroit Police K-9 team are assisting with the case, he said. The injured officer was treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

“I just really need our parents to step up. At this time of night, our kids should not be out, and they should not have hand guns,” Bettison said.

He implored anyone with information about the incident to call 911.
