Man shot, killed by Philadelphia police after reportedly firing at officers in Fairhill neighborhood

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A man was shot and killed by police after he reportedly opened fire on officers who were responding to a domestic-related 911 call.

It happened just after 6 p.m. Friday on the 2900 block of Lawrence Street in the city’s Fairhill section.

According to First Deputy Commissioner John Stanford, the suspect started firing at officers as soon as they exited their vehicles.

Update on officer-involved shooting that left man dead on July 4, 2025.

“The male exits the property and continues to fire at the officers. The officers take a tactical retreat between vehicles — park vehicles — that are along the other side of the street,” said Stanford.

Four officers returned fire before authorities say the suspect jumped into a police vehicle.

“He continues to fire at the officers as they approach the vehicle. The officers continue to discharge. At one point in time the male exits the vehicle and then goes to the ground,” said Stanford.

Police say the man in his 40s was taken to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries. It’s still unclear how many times he was shot.

Police say no officers were injured in the incident.

The weapon believed to be used by the suspect was found inside the police vehicle, Stanford said.
