A Grayslake man and a Beach Park man have been identified after authorities say they both died when their small plane crashed into a field in Boone County.

The Boone County Fire Protection District #1, Capron Rescue Squad and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:50 p.m. Saturday to the area of Capron Road and Blaine Road in LeRoy Township, north of the town of Capron.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and found two victims dead following a plane crash, which resulted in substantial damage.

The FAA said the plane was a Vans RV-10 and that it crashed into a farm field around 3:10 p.m., which was approximately 40 minutes before emergency crews were notified.

The two victims who died were the only occupants on the plane, which crashed “under unknown circumstances, the FAA reported.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) responded and are investigating.

The Boone County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday identified the victims as Scott M. Wentz, 60, of Grayslake, and Kenneth C. Serzynski, 74, of Beach Park.

Data from the plane showed the Vans RV-10 departed from Waukegan National Airport before traveling directly west and crashing in Boone County.

FAA data shows the aircraft was a kit plane owned and built by Wentz in 2019.

The NTSB is the lead investigating agency. Further updates have not been released on what may have caused the crash.
