The TBI has joined an investigation after a Cleveland, Tennessee, officer shot a man driving a fleeing vehicle that dragged the officer.
District Attorney Stephen Hatchett requested the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to investigate the shooting that wounded Johnny Broglin, 43, of Georgetown, Tennessee. Broglin was the driver of the car involved in the incident that happened around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities said in a statement.
A woman who was a passenger in the car and was being sought by the officer on an outstanding shoplifting warrant, identified as Samantha Kaye Burd, 43, remains at large, according to Cleveland Police Department spokesperson Lt. Evie West.

The officer, who has not been named, spotted a vehicle at a Speedway gas station on Westland Drive that had fled from him the previous day, authorities said in the statement. Since seeing the vehicle the first time, the officer had determined it belonged to Burd, and when he spotted Burd in the passenger seat of the car Sunday, he attempted to remove and arrest her. Broglin was at the wheel.
According to the statement, Broglin sped off, dragging the officer through the Speedway parking lot, and the officer fired his weapon, striking Broglin, who then fled the scene, authorities said. Broglin was later found at a Sipes Road residence and taken into custody.
The TBI described Broglin’s injuries as not life-threatening. He was taken to a hospital for treatment for gunshot wounds. The officer was also treated for several injuries he sustained in the incident that were described as minor.

“He was banged up pretty bad, but he’s going to be OK,” West said by phone Tuesday.
The officer’s identity isn’t being released because he is also considered a victim in the incident, West said. Broglin was treated for his injuries, released from the hospital and taken to the Bradley County Jail, where he is being held without bond. Booking records show he faces a July 10 hearing in Bradley County General Sessions Court.
Meanwhile, authorities are still seeking Burd, West said. Burd is described as a white woman, 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds with blonde hair, fair skin and blue eyes, police records show.
