NEWBERRY, S.C. (WIS/WCSC) – A teen who was set to be an incoming freshman on Newberry College’s football team died in a shooting over the weekend.
WCSC reports 18-year-old Mycheal Edwards-Wallace was one of two people killed after an incident in Kingstree on Sunday. He and 16-year-old Edwin Cooper were shot at an apartment complex.
Edwards-Wallace was a recent graduate of Kingstree High School and was set to play football for Newberry. He notably played in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas and was an all-state, all-area and all-region selection.
“Our hearts go out to his family,” Newberry head coach Todd Knight said in a statement. “It’s such a tragedy for a talented young man to be struck down at a young age. He was a good student and a great young man with a terrific personality and a bright future. We were really excited to have him as a part of our team. He will always be a part of our Newberry family.”
“The entire Newberry College community extends its deepest condolences to Mycheal’s family, friends, and teammates,“ Newberry College said in a statement. ”We are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
